The word Onyx comes from a Latin word derived from the Greek ὄνυξ, meaning “claw” or “fingernail”. It is found in a number of colours, including black red and white and the flesh tone coloured onyx was thought to resemble a fingernail. It has been used for a long time throughout to make beads, intaglio and cameo carvings and jewellery. In ancient Egypt it was often carved into bowls. In feng shui Black Onyx is used as a protective stone in amulets, bracelets and carved animals.

Onyx is a variety of banded chalcedony, a member of the quartz family with a hardness of 7. It can be found in Brazil, USA, Canada, Scotland and Russia.
